Yoga FAQs

FAQs

Who is this class for?

Anyone who wants to learn more about yoga. No experience is required!

What type of yoga are you teaching/what can I expect?

This is a beginner yoga series. We will pay particular attention to alignment and safety so you can practice yoga comfortably and safely for years to come. Our classes will be familiar to those who do Vinyasa flow, but designed for those who don't have much experience with yoga. Expect postures (asanas), breath work (pranayama), learning and experience poses, meditation, plus a bit of time for relaxation.

I have yoga experience. Can I come? Absolutely! Different body sizes and types, ages and skill levels make for the best learning experience. While this class will be created for beginners, experienced yogis are welcome to come and modify poses as you wish. We believe the yoga space is one where everyone can learn from each other!

What if I can’t make all six weeks?

Totally fine. Although this is a series, building on the focus and poses taught week by week, each class within it stands alone. You can join at any time. We will also offer a brief review at the beginning of each class, so you can easily get caught up if you miss one. Come for any and all weeks that work for you and your schedule.

I haven’t exercised in awhile. Will I be able to keep up? Absolutely. Unlike so many other arenas in our lives, yoga is not a competitive sport, but rather a community experience, where we seek to look upon ourselves and others through the lens of kindness as we meet on the mat. One of the gifts of yoga is learning to listen to what your body is telling you. We will give options for some of the more challenging poses, so you can choose what feels good and right in your body, in the moment. We will also share options for resting, like child’s pose or mountain pose.

What do I need to bring with me?

A yoga mat and a water bottle. If you have favorite props, like blocks, a blanket or a strap, you’re encouraged to bring those too!

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes that you can move in. Some people like leggings. Others like shorts. We’ve even seen people practice in jeans (but personally think that might be uncomfortable). Wear what feels good and will support you.

Should I wear socks?

You can. But generally speaking it’s easier and safer to be barefoot. But you know your body and comfort level, so we trust you to make the best decision for you.

This class is at a church. Do I have to be a member? Will you pressure me to come to church? What if I’m not a Christian or not religious?

This series is offered to the Marietta/Atlanta community at large. No church membership or affiliation is required, and there will be no proselytizing. We welcome any and everybody who wishes to come and experience the joy of yoga, regardless of age, ability, body shape, race, sexual orientation, gender, or economic status. This class is free and open to all.

Why is a church offering yoga?

Being human is complicated. Being in a body is complicated. We believe that our spiritual health is tied to our physical and emotional wellbeing. And we believe that yoga is one way to support that well-being.

What’s the catch?

There’s not one. Really!

Who are the teacher(s)?

Sarah Fisher and Mandy Brady are both brand-spanking-new yoga instructors. Come learn with us as we learn with you! (Yes, it’s the same Sarah who is the pastor/rector of the church. She’ll be out of her church clothes and dressed in leggings!) Your willingness to learn will help us learn and grow as we begin teaching. We strive to meet mistakes with kindness and a good dose of humor, and hope you’ll do the same for us. Join us as we step into imperfect action, engage our bodies and have fun!  (For both Sarah and Mandy: RYT200)
